How To Backup And Restore WhatsApp Messages On Android

For some people, keeping a record of all their conversations is pretty important. While the concept seems rather useless to me, if does really matter to you, well, it does. Now, for SMS, it’s pretty easy to back those up to the cloud, local storage, or even sync with your Gmail account. In case of WhatsApp, too, that’s pretty simple. In a nutshell, the app itself backs up all your conversations on a daily basis, and would restore all your messages should you ever need that. You may also back up messages at will, other than the daily auto-backups.

To take a manual message backup in WhatsApp for Android, follow these steps.

Step 1: Launch WhatsApp Messenger, tap the menu key and go to Settings.
Step 2: Go to Chat Settings, within where you will find the Backup conversations option.
Step 3: Tap that, and the backup date and time below it will change to your Android’s current settings. All of your conversations have been backed up.

How To Restore Conversations From WhatsApp Messenger Backup

WhatsApp conversations can only be restored, either on the same device or on a new one, at the time of a new installation of the app itself. Hence, there might be different ways to restore from a backup, depending on the restore scenario. Let’s discuss a few one by one.

Restoring WhatsApp Backup On The Same Device

Imagine you somehow deleted your conversations on WhatsApp by accident, and now want to restore them, taking advantage of your daily backups. It’s pretty straightforward; delete the WhatsApp client from your device, and reinstall it. During installation, the app will ask if you want to restore your conversations, where you can hit Yes and that’s it.

Transfer WhatsApp Backup To Another Android Device

WhatsApp is set up in such a way that you can easily transfer your message threads to any device. Essentially, you have a WhatsApp folder in either your device’s internal memory or SD card, which you may transfer to any phone to restore the conversations on the target device.

  • If your WhatsApp folder is on the SD card, just remove the card from the source device, insert it into the target device and install WhatsApp. When asked for restoring backup, just agree to that and you’re good to go.
  • If the WhatsApp folder is in internal memory (as with almost all Nexus phones and tablets), copy that folder from one device to the other, and follow the same installation method.
Backing up and restoring WhatsApp messages are both easily processed, and you can be rest assured that even if you change your smartphone, you can still take your WhatsApp conversations with you without hassle. If all else doesn’t suit you, you can even email conversations to yourself should you just want to keep a record.

CyanogenMod 10 (CM10) Alpha 4.1 for Samsung Galaxy W GT-I8150

What's working:
Audio
Receiving and making calls
GPS
Compass
Proximity sensor
Wifi
Bluetooth
USB mass storage
HW accelerated gui
HW accelerated video
Camera
Torch
Wifi/USB tethering

Not working:
The 2.6 kernel doesn't have vsync required for full project butter experience. The 3.0 kernel version has this though.
Camera is not working on the 3.0 kernel version.

Annoyances:
Artifacts in preview for panorama shots
Green color when taking pictures (saved picture is ok though)
USB tethering must be activated twice if it's the first boot
The fix for HSDPA causes an issue with APN's in Jelly Bean if you use SIM pin lock. To workaround that turn on and off airplane mode after entering pin code.

WARNING: Many apps will Force Close crash if you restore data from a previous ROM.

Install
  1. Use CWM5 or CWM6.
    • Warning: Only use this recovery to flash CM10. Otherwise, you risk bricking your phone!
  2. Wipe data and cache.
  3. Flash update*.zip.
  4. Flash gapps*.zip. You must flash gapps after every upgrade to CM10 since /system is formatted, wiping your previous add-ons.
  5. Reboot phone.
  6. After you setup your Google account, reinstall the three apps from Market in order to restore most of your apps, call log and SMS history.
  7. Warning: Do not restore backup data of system apps!
    • If you restore a bad backup with cached settings in telephony.db in data/data/com.*.*.telephony it can break MMS.
    • It seems that restoring backups can also break Calendar sync.
Upgrades
Upgrades from previous versions of CM10 are the same process as install, except you do not need to wipe anything. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to even wipe cache and dalvik-cache when upgrading between CM10 versions. You only need to wipe if you are doing a major upgrade, switching to a different ROM entirely, or attempting to fix bugs caused by bad backups or corrupt app data.

Before you install CM9: Preparation (First three are optional. If you want to start fresh, these can be skipped)

  1. Install AppBak from Market, run it and save a list of all your apps.
  2. Install SMS Backup and Restore from Market, run it and backup your SMS history.
  3. Install Call Logs Backup and Restore from Market, run it and backup your call log history.
  4. Boot into CWM5 recovery. Make a full backup. You will need this backup later if you decide to go back to your previous ROM and data.
WARNING: Many apps will Force Close crash if you restore data from a previous ROM.

Install

  1. Use CWM5 or CWM6.
    • Warning: Only use this recovery to flash CM9. Otherwise, you risk bricking your phone!
  2. Wipe data and cache.
  3. Flash update*.zip.
  4. Flash gapps*.zip. You must flash gapps after every upgrade to CM9 since /system is formatted, wiping your previous add-ons.

Upgrades
Upgrades from previous versions of CM9 are the same process as install, except you do not need to wipe anything. Contrary to popular belief, you do not need to even wipe cache and dalvik-cache when upgrading between CM9 versions. You only need to wipe if you are doing a major upgrade, switching to a different ROM entirely, or attempting to fix bugs caused by bad backups or corrupt app data.

ClockworkMod v6.0.1.2 For Samsung Galaxy Wonder GT-I8150

Here's CWM recovery, built from the latest version included in the ICS sources. It has support for both internal and external sd card, with the internal being the default. As such, the internal has mount point /sdcard, and the external has /external_sd. Nothing you should normally need to know, unless you want to mount them manually in adb shell.

I provide it in two packages, dependent on how you want to flash it. One for flashing manually in adb shell, and one for flashing with Odin.

recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-ancora.zip -> for flashing in adb shell
Don't flash the zip file, but extract and flash the img file.

recovery-clockwork-6.0.1.2-ancora.tar.md5 -> for flashing with Odin
Select the ops file, and enable one package in options, then load the md5 file with the One Package button

In addition, you need Ancora.ops it you're gonna flash it with Odin.

How to navigate in menus:
Volume buttons = go up and down
Home button = select
Power button = go back

The instructions on how to install ClockworkMod v6.0.1.2 is the same as CWM 5.

How to Flash and Install stock ROM using Odin on Samsung Galaxy W (Wonder) I8150

This is a step by step guide on how to flash the Samsung Galaxy W GT-I8150 stock ROMs. This method is by way using Odin downloader tool instead of Kies which is useful in downgrading, upgrading and reverting your device back to original stock or official firmware.

Grab the files needed for flashing
Grab the following necessary  tools for this procedure.

* Odin Multi Downloader v4.43 + Ancora Ops
Download Odin Multi Downloader v4.43 + Ancora Ops :
* Stock ROMs for Samsung Galaxy W GT-I8150 (choose the right firmware that match with your device product code or via CSC file)
List of Stock ROMs can be found here.
* Samsung driver download ( you need the phone driver if you don't have Kies previously installed on your PC. )
Download Samsung driver :
-- Extract the archive files using winrar or 7zip

Odin Flashing procedure on how to install Stock ROM on Samsung Galaxy W (Wonder) GT-I8150

1. Run Odin Multi Downloader v4.43

2. Load the OPS file - click on Ops button then select and load the Ancora.ops.
Always mark these option: Protect OPS, Auto-Reboot and F-Reset time.

3. Load md5 files on its designated space.

One Package - This comes with a single packed tar file with the SS_DL.dll on it. (the dll is not to be use)
It already contains the PDA, Phone Modem and CSC in a single file only.
Just click on the 'One Package checkbox' then click on the 'One package button' then load and select your single packed stock ROM.  Like for this one flashing with a Europe stock ROM.

One Packaged: I8150XXKK1_I8150OXXKJ6_I8150XXKK1_HOME.tar.md5

Multiple Package - This comes with individual files Bootloader, PDA, Phone modem and CSC file.
This packaged is good for fixing soft brick and returning your device into original stock for it has a full and complete firmware files.
So after loading the ops file, you need to load the specific md5 files on each designated spaces. Browse to where you extracted your ROM select it. If you cant find it you didn't extract it. Like this one below using an ASIA stock ROM.
OPS – Ancora.ops.

Boot – APBOOT_I8150ZSKI3_CL613004_REV00_user_low_ship_EMMC.tar.md5.

Phone– SMD_MODEM_I8150ZSKI3_CL613004_REV00_user_low_ship_EMMC.smd.md5.

PDA – SMD_PDA_I8150ZSKI3_CL613004_REV00_user_low_ship_EMMC.smd.md5.

CSC– SMD_CSC_GT-I8150-MULTI-CSC-OZSKI3_EMMC.smd.md5

4. Set the the Galaxy W I8150 into "Download Mode" -  Before connecting the device to PC USB you need to put it into download mode state, so that Odin will recognize it. To set the device into download mode, turn the 'POWER OFF' then gently press and hold the ( Volume Down, Home and Power Button ) at the same time.
Then there's confirmation message appears like the picture below,  then just press "Volume Up to continue".

If struggling into download mode, this is a little bit tricky sometime. Try to remove the battery for a while then put it back again, then try the button combination again.

5. Connect the Phone to PC or laptop - Once the device already displays "Downloading... Do Not Turn Off  Target", it's now time to connect it to PC. In Odin the COM: Mapping box will turn to color yellow and it says "added! or detected!!" in the log box when the device is properly connected and Odin recognized the phone.
(If  still struggling for the connection set up, do this: re-install driver, check and try using another good USB cable wire and PC.)

6. Click the "START" button - Once all of the above was set and went smoothly begin flashing.
Wait until the firmware installation finishes. You will be notified with a word "PASS!" in Odin if the Flashing process successfully completes. Let the phone reboot for a while, then it's time to unplug it from PC.

If the flashing fails don't panic. Switch to a different port of your PC and then repeat the process again.

Note: First boot takes longer time than usual.
